The homeland of the English language which we are studying is an island state, the United Kingdom. Britain’s location "away" from Europe became the main reason of British traditions’ being so different from the European ones. English holidays are no exception. Many of them coincide with European holidays, but are celebrated in a special way, and some have no analogues in the world.

Studying about holidays of England and other British countries is very interesting. We can compare the British holidays and traditions with our holidays. It helps to understand the nature of the British, their lifestyle, the differences between our characters. In addition, many English traditions and festivals celebrated in England are becoming popular all over the world.

The festive year in England begins, like ours, with New Year is celebrated on January 1st. But New Year celebration in the United Kingdom can not be studied separately from Christmas celebration on December 25th. This week is the brightest of the year. Like we do, the British install Christmas trees in their homes, streets and in churches. They decorate not only trees, but also their homes, yards and streets. Flashing lights, garlands, figures of Santa Claus and nativity Scenes, big and small, can be seen everywhere.

By the way, all December is filled with pre-holiday bustle. The fact is that from the 25th of December to the 1st of January, most shops are closed. So everyone wants to buy gifts for the loved ones and take care of everything required for a holiday beforehand. Holidays when banks and other specialized institutions are closed, are known as bank holidays. The list of them is traditionally approved by the Queen. The holiday week includes, except Christmas and New Year, Boxing Day which is celebrated on December 26.

Next after Christmas and New Year, there comes a holiday which is also marked all over England and abroad – St. Valentine"s Day. The tradition of congratulating the loved ones was so great that it has become popular all around the world. On this day, people who feel sympathy for each other, exchange heart shaped presents. There are many variants of gifts - cards with romantic poems, small pillows, sweets, toys and souvenirs. Everything that can bring positive emotions to a beloved person will do.

Spring festive season in the UK is also rich in bright events. In March, for example, they celebrate St. Patrick"s Day – the day of Ireland’s patron saint. On this day, the Irish and other residents of Britain wear green clothes or attach the emblem of shamrock. In April, they celebrate the day of England’s patron saint - St George. On this day you can see a red rose on the clothes of the British, and in the streets you can hear folk songs and playing national instruments.

And still in March and April an entire series of Easter events is marked - Good Friday, Holy Resurrection (Easter) and Easter Monday, when children are presented with flowers and toys. In England, they do not use boiled chicken egg, as a symbol of Easter. But in every house you will find chocolate eggs in colorful wrappers, egg shaped souvenirs and Easter bunny figures.

Do not also forget about the April day of fun, which is called "Fool"s Day" in England and "Cuckoo’s Day" in Scotland. Just like we do, on this day the British are playing jokes on each other. The first May Monday is declared a public holiday in Britain. This is the holiday of spring and blooming nature. Such fun activities as carnivals and festivals are held everywhere. On this day the streets are decorated with flower garlands, and the national hero, Robin Hood, is honored. A similar rest day is held in August, on the last Monday of the month. People organize family picnics, fairs, carnivals and festivals.

The official birthday of the monarch, which falls on the second Saturday of June, may not coincide with the real date of birth of a king or a queen. On this day a ceremonial parade and troops review are held, and then a magnificent secular ball finishes the day.
I guess people all over the world like holidays. During celebration time people, as a rule, visit their friends and relatives, have parties and give and receive presents. Some of the holidays have its own customs and traditions.
Holidays in Great Britain
Unfortunately, I’ve never been to England, and my desire is to visit Great Britain during Christmas celebration. The atmosphere is wonderful: there are a lot of Christmas trees everywhere; houses are decorated with candles and toys.
Christmas is celebrated at the 25 th of December and is thought to be a family holiday. Children decorate their Christmas trees with lights, toys, candies, candles and looking forward to receive presents from a Santa Claus, who is believed to come down the chimney and leave gifts in children’s stockings. Both children and adults like this magnificent holiday!
Holidays in Russia
There are a lot of national holidays in Russia. I would like to tell you about Easter. So what are the symbols of this holiday? Firstly there are traditional dishes such as panted eggs, Easter cakes and paskha.
Speaking about specific Russian traditions there must be mentioned that people congratulate each other on the fest saying: “Christos Voskrese”, there is no such a tradition in English- or French-speaking countries.
My favourite holiday
My family like holidays very much because you can have fun all day long and don’t have to do anything. Our favorite holiday is a New Year’s Day. My family and I celebrate it together with relatives at the 31st of December.
Grandfather Frost and his granddaughter Snegurochka are thought to be the main characters of New Year in Russia. They deliver and give presents to small children.
At Christmas Day, together with my family we sing, dance and have fun.

К сожалению, я никогда не был в Англии, но мне бы хотелось посетить эту страну во время Рождественских праздников. Рождественская атмосфера городов зачаровывает: повсюду наряженные рождественские елки, дома украшены огнями и игрушками.
В Англии Рождество празднуется 25 декабря и считается семейным праздником. Дети украшают елки гирляндами, игрушками, конфетами и свечками, и с нетерпением ожидают, когда Санта Клаус принесет им подарки. По легенде он спускается в дом через дымоход и оставляет подарки в рождественских чулках. Дети и взрослые любят этот замечательный праздник!
Праздники в России
В России много национальных праздников, но мне бы хотелось рассказать о Пасхе. Какие же символы у этого торжества? В первую очередь, на праздничный стол подают традиционные блюда: крашеные пасхальные яйца, пасхальные куличи и творожная пасха.
Следует упомянуть о традиционных именно для России обычаях, например, только русскоговорящие поздравляют друг друга словами «Христос Воскресе». В англоязычных или франкоговорящих странах такой традиции не существует.
Мой любимый праздник
Моя семья очень любит праздники, ведь можно целыми днями только и делать, что веселиться, и проводить время с родными и близкими. Наш любимый праздник – Новый Год. Моя семья празднует его с нашими родственниками 31 декабря.
Главными персонажами Новогоднего торжества являются Дед Мороз и его внучка Снегурочка. Они приносят и дарят подарки маленьким детям. В новогоднюю ночь мы с семьей поем, танцуем и веселимся.
There are many national holidays in the world, when people all over the country do not work and have special celebrations. For example in Russia the major holidays are: New Year"s Day, Victory Day. The first holiday of the year is New Year"s Day. People see the new year in at midnight on the 31st of December. They greet the new year with champagne and listen to the Kremlin chimes beating 12 o"clock. There are lots of New Year traditions in Russia. In every home there is a New Year tree glittering with colored lights and decorations. Children always wait for Father Frost to come and give them a present. Many people consider New Year"s Day to be a family holiday. But the young prefer to have New Year parties of their own. The greatest national holiday in our country is Victory Day. On the 9lh of May, 1945, the Soviet Army and its allies completely defeated the German fascists and the Second World War ended. A lot of guests from different countries of the world came to Moscow to participate in the celebrations. There are fewer public holidays in Great Britain than in other European countries. They are: Christmas Day, New Year"s Day, Easter Monday, Spring Bank Holiday. Public holidays in Britain arc called bank holidays, because the banks as well as most of the offices and shops are closed. The most popular holiday is Christmas. Every year the people of Norway give the city of London a present. It"s a big Christmas tree and it stands in Trafalgar Square. Central streets are beautifully decorated. The fun starts the night before, on the 24th of December. Traditionally this is the day when people decorate their trees. Children hang stockings at the end of their beds, hoping that Father Christmas will come down the chimney during the night and fill them with toys and sweets. New Year"s Day is less popular in Britain than Christmas. But in Scotland, Hogmanay is the biggest festival of the year. Besides public holidays there are some special festivals in Great Britain. There are also smaller, local festivals in Britain. Now a few words about holidays in Brazil. The most important event in brazil - this a festival in Rio-de-Janeiro, which passes each year at the end of February the beginning of March. The festival lasts 4 days and 4 night. In Rio there are special schools, which train the people to dance Samba and Lambada. Each of these schools exposes on a holiday about 4000 dancers and 300 drummers. Other important event in Brazil in the year is ancient religious holiday MACUMBA, which is celebrated by Brazilian in the new year eve. During this holiday on sand of a beach KOPACABANA people place drinks and meal and light candles thirsted in sand. People in the midnight throw in the water their gifts and if ocean takes them, the year will be successful, but if it throws out on a coast, the year will not present. In the different countries according to their traditions and history, there is a set of various national holidays. How I spent the summer
| In summer I usually visit my grandma, who lives in a village, go to the mountains with my uncle, or spend a week or two by the sea with my parents. But this summer was really different, as at the end of July my parents, my uncle and I went to the Republic of Karelia. |
| First we arrived in Petrozavodsk where we spent two days. We walked around the city, visited parks, museums and churches, took photos and bought souvenirs for our friends and relatives. Then we went to Kizhi – an island in the center of the Lake Onega. There we saw old wooden churches which were really amazing. |
| But we spent most of the time in Karelian woods. We collected mushrooms and my uncle caught some fish in the lake. |
| The water in lakes was too cold to swim in it, but my father and I went sailing several times. We walked through pine woods and swamps where we collected a lot of different berries: cranberries, cowberries, blueberries, bilberries and cloudberries. |
| On the way home we also visited Valaam monastery on Ladoga Lake. It was founded about a thousand years ago. We watched a service in the Cathedral of the Transfiguration of the Saviour and saw the famous miracle-working Valaam Icon of the Mother of God. |
| I liked my summer holidays very much. The nature of Karelia is wonderful: pure lakes, waterfalls, rocks covered with pine wood. I tasted different northern berries, and I saw an elk for the first time in my life. We all really enjoyed our trip and decided to go to Lake Baikal next summer. |

After each term in school we had our holidays. It"s fun to have holidays, you can do whatever you like, you don"t have to get up too early, do your homework or think of troubles which occur very often at school.
Most of all I liked summer holidays, they were the longest ones, though, when winter was snowy and and frosty, I enjoyed my winter holidays skating and skiing, sledging and making a snowman or having a fight with snowballs.
I"d like to tell you about my summer holidays I spent in Sochi. It was just three years ago. My parents and me were sitting in the living-room discussing our plans for the summer holidays. My father suggested that we should go to Sochi. On hearing that I jumped up with joy and said it was a wonderful idea. My mother wasn"t against the idea either.
So one summer morning we started for our journey to Sochi. First, we travelled to Odessa by plane and from there we got to Sochi by boat. We stayed in Odessa for three days, our relatives live there and they gave us board and lodging. So we had an excellent opportunity to go round the city, to see beautiful monuments to the famous people who had lived in Odessa, museums and the Odessa Opera House.
We enjoyed our trip from Odessa to Sochi. The Black Sea was calm. We sat on deck in the lounge chairs and looked at the sea. I like Sochi very much, we bathed and went boating and swim-ming, lay in the sun on the beach. In the evenings we went for a walk or dropped in at a cafe to have ice-cream or juice. My father showed us the famous Botanical Gardens, we went for hikes in the mountains, we saw the magnificent Augura Waterfalls.
The sea was nice and warm. The weather was fine. When it was time to go home, we were sorry to leave the marvellous town of Sochi.
